2025 Winter Sports: A Season of Unforgettable Triumphs and Remarkable Growth

The 2024-25 winter sports season was one to remember, marked by outstanding achievements across all programs. The Boys Varsity Basketball team reached the second round of the HVAL playoffs for the first time in over ten years. Both of our swim teams earned CISAC runner-up honors—a feat not accomplished together since the 2020 season. Meanwhile, our determined Varsity and JV Girls’ Basketball teams continued to  secure impressive victories, showcasing remarkable growth for both programs.

Varsity Co-Ed Swim

Coaches: Alexander Greene & Dana Clark
Record: 7 – 5

The 2024-25 swim season was exceptional, growing from 10 to 24 swimmers. The team celebrated back-to-back wins over Eagle Hill and Marianapolis, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams earning CISAC Runner-Up honors. At the Division III NEPSAC Championship, nine swimmers made the finals. The boys’ team placed fifth out of 11, and the girls’ team placed eighth out of 12, despite only three girls competing.

Liam Cai ’27 was named the third-best male swimmer in NEPSAC Division III, winning the 50-yd and 100-yd freestyles and scoring 117 points throughout the season. Vicky van Berkel ’30, our top female swimmer, broke the Williams girls’ 100-yd breaststroke record three times, scored 112 points, and earned silver and bronze medals in the 100-yd breaststroke and 200-yd IM at NEPSAC. Gus van Berkel ’26 scored 102 points, earned bronze in the 100-yd butterfly, and helped the boys’ 400-yd freestyle relay team—consisting of Eddie Keane ’27, Ken Wang ’26, and Cai—win bronze. All of these swimmers were named to the 2025 ALL-NEPSAC First Team, leaving a lasting legacy on the Williams swim program.

Boys Varsity Basketball

Coaches: Miles Daniels & Mike Kelly
Record: 5 – 8

The Boys Varsity Basketball team demonstrated determination and growth throughout the season. The Blues kicked off their campaign with a dominant 61-38 win over HVAL rival Forman, with standout performances from Jadiel Thomas ’26 and Henry Champagne ’26. Despite tough losses to teams like Christian Heritage and Wooster, the boys showed resilience, including key victories like a 67-35 win over Fishers Island and a thrilling 42-39 upset over Watkinson in the HVAL playoffs.

The season culminated in a dramatic overtime victory against Wooster, with Robby Shay ’25 scoring 14 points to lead the team to a 49-41 win. Though their journey this season ended with a loss to Harvey, the team’s growth and strong performances from players like Thomas ‘26, Champagne ‘26, and Sean Dockery ’26 laid a solid foundation for future seasons.

Boys JV/MS Basketball

Coaches: Bernard Braithwaite & Jack Fader ‘15
Record: 3 – 5

The Boys’ JV/MS Basketball team had a season marked by growth and resilience. They began with a 42-27 win in their first intrasquad game, with Elijah Rodriguez ’29 leading the charge with 22 points. The team also secured solid victories, including a 29-24 win over Pine Point and a 43-30 triumph against Our Lady of Mercy, where every player contributed offensively.

Despite a few tough losses, the boys displayed excellent teamwork and defense, particularly in close games like their narrow defeat to Rocky Hill, where they held their opponent to just two points in the final quarter. Standout performances from Rodriguez ‘29, Will Dockery ’29, and John Paul Champagne ’31 highlighted the team’s potential for future progress.

Girls Varsity Basketball

Record: 7 – 3

The Girls Varsity Basketball team had an exciting and successful season, finishing with a 7-3 record. They opened the season with a thrilling 34-33 win over Christian Heritage, led by Annie Shay ’27 and key defensive plays from Annie Gingras ’29. The team continued their strong start with victories over Christian Heritage, Westover, and Fishers Island, with Elle Reid ’29 scoring a career-high 20 points in the win over Westover.

After tough losses to Rocky Hill and Bancroft, the team bounced back to end the season on a high note, defeating Wooster. Key players like Lena Cosentino ’29, Kate van Berkel ’28, and Gabby Ivy ’28 contributed consistently on both offense and defense, while Sydney Swenson-Cardwell ’28 scored a career-high 16 points in the final game. The team’s solid defense, rebounding, and teamwork were critical to their success.

Girls JV/MS Basketball

Record: 8 – 1

The Girls’ JV/MS Basketball team finished their season with an 8-1 record, marked by strong teamwork and standout performances. After a tough overtime loss to Rectory, the team bounced back with key wins over Pine Point, Wheeler, and Block Island. Elle Reid ’29 and Lena Cosentino ’29 were top contributors, with Reid leading in scoring and Cosentino providing strong offense and defense.

The team’s defense was crucial to their success, including victories like a 43-16 win over Rocky Hill and a 27-25 win over Rectory. With contributions from Gabby Ivy ’28, Sydney Swenson-Cardwell ’28, and Annie Gingras ’29, the Blues showcased impressive growth and resilience throughout the season.
