Faculty Profile

Scott Hockford - 30 Years at Williams

Question – what is the square root of 900? Yes, that is Mr. Hockford’s years of teaching math at The Williams School. Congratulations to Scott for an amazing 30 year run and your ability to adapt the latest technology and software that comes with teaching the highest level math classes each year. Don’t be fooled by this ability to teach some of our most talented math students though, Scott is equally adept at teaching the youngest grades and our sometimes most vulnerable and least confident students mathematics. You’re known for your PODS, PartyPODS and of course your end of year karaoke; and do know these methods of getting students to enjoy math shouldn’t be taken for granted. We all know how much you care about making sure your students understand the concepts and skills you are teaching them as we witnessed the countless number of students who come to you for ninth period and even the one long weekend afternoon you spend with those wishing for extra help and practice on the AP exam. As you’ve reached year thirty, I hope this equals the number of Cincinnati Reds shirts you can now wear to school. I am sure we will see you lots this summer as you spend countless hours here working on lessons, grading, and listening to your country music. Congratulations on truly a remarkable career at Williams!

Remembering

Ed Wheeler Celebration of Life & Scholarship Fund

On March 25th of this year, the beloved Edward T. Wheeler, a cornerstone of The Williams School since 1977, passed away. Ed wore numerous hats: Assistant Head, Dean of Faculty, Chair of English Department, even donning wigs and gorilla suits for lively school assemblies in the Daren Performing Arts Center. Ed embodied wisdom and morality for many, both as a stabilizing force and a source of reason. His influence extended through teaching, editing publications, and fostering pedagogical excellence. A scholar of remarkable depth, Ed immersed himself in many Williams traditions. His intellectual prowess, spanning from Middle English to obscure songs, never tainted his humility. As a friend and advisor, Ed provided unwavering support to me and countless others, leaving an indelible legacy.

At Ed’s celebration of life in June, we launched The Edward T. Wheeler Scholarship Fund with help from alum and former faculty member, Rand Cooper ’76, honoring the service of Ed Wheeler, who enriched generations of Williams students and colleagues alike with his love of literature, teaching and writing.
