Middle School
Middle School at Williams is a formative time for students in grades 6–8. In the classroom, students engage in a “prep-for-prep” curriculum designed to build the skills, habits, and content knowledge needed to succeed in our rigorous Upper School program. Beyond core academic subjects, students explore enrichment opportunities in the visual and performing arts, physical and social-emotional education, research, and technology, helping them discover new interests while building confidence and independence.

How Students Learn at Williams
Middle School students learn how to learn through engaging coursework that builds strong academic habits, critical thinking, organization, and independence. With close faculty guidance, students master essential content while discovering their interests and developing the skills needed for the challenges of Upper School.
Middle School Curriculum
The Middle School curriculum focuses on teaching students how to learn as they prepare for a more rigorous college-prep curriculum.
While content is important, Williams’ engaging classrooms and teachers help students grasp subject matter while helping them discover their interests and passions.
Students are placed in Math and Language courses based on ability, not grade level. Students may learn alongside peers in other grades while working at the level most appropriate for them.
The 8th Grade Experience
In 8th grade, students participate in the “Be the Change” Capstone Project, where each student researches and volunteers with a local nonprofit organization before presenting their experience to peers and families each spring.
At the end of the school year, 8th graders are celebrated at a Moving Up Ceremony as they advance to Upper School. A special citation is read for each graduate, recognizing their personal achievements and growth throughout Middle School.
Middle School Course Offerings
Middle School courses provide a strong foundation across English, history, science, mathematics, world languages, and enrichment. Students are challenged at the appropriate level, with math and language placement based on readiness and ability rather than grade alone.

Meet the Director
Joe Cote
Joe Cote serves as Director of Middle School Teaching and Learning at Williams, a role he assumed in 2025 after joining the School in 2008. A longtime member of the Williams community, Mr. Cote has supported generations of students as they develop the academic skills, confidence, and curiosity needed for success in the Upper School and beyond. He earned his undergraduate degree from Providence College and is the parent of three children, including Williams graduate Julia ’25, who developed her interests in lacrosse and academics during her time at the School. Outside of Williams, he enjoys reading, fishing, hiking, sports, psychology, and pop culture.
